Role-debut as Sesto (La Clemenza di Tito)

Anaïk Morel’s last season was strongly dominated by the role of Charlotte (Werther) which was to become her favourite part henceforth. Her successful debut in Klagenfurt was followed by no less successful revivals of this role at the Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg and at the Zürich Opera.

Compared to sopranos Mozart considerably neglected the mezzo-sopranos. However, the breeches-part of Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito is an absolutely stunning role in this repertoire. Our French mezzo-soprano is now singing this part for the first time at the Klagenfurt Stadttheater concurrently joining her first Mozartian opera since season 2009/10 while she was still an opera-studio-member at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (2nd Lady in The Magic Flute).

Opening-night on November 8, 2018. Further performances until December 19, 2018.

Charlotte at the Zurich Opera!

At the beginning of the current season Anaïk Morel made her sensational role-debut as Charlotte (Werther) at the Klagenfurt Theatre, followed by another deeply moving portrait of this part few weeks ago at the Opéra du Rhin. On short term and sort of surmounting an already outstandingly successful season marked by her new role, our mezzo-soprano from Lyon has been called now to perform Charlotte also at the Zurich Opera. A well deserved appreciation for a world-class singer!

Revival of Werther at the Zurich Opera on May 10, 2018. All dates of performances.

Carmen in Montpellier

Right after her Charlotte in Massenet’s Werther at the Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg, Anaïk Morel appears as Carmen at the Opéra de Montpellier.

Let’s still remain with her Charlotte at the Opéra du Rhin (two more performances to follow at La Filature in Mulhouse on March 2nd and 4th), a production which was widely commented in press and media. You will find some press-quotes below (in fact detailed reports, however, what should be left aside?):

„Mezzo-soprano Anaïk Morel expresses the complexity of Charlotte’s character in gesture and voice. No matter whether she scrunches Christmas baubles, crouches down on the floor in foetal curl, or whether she breaks free in high dudgeon from Albert’s imposed embrace, nothing detracts the clearness of her articulation or her vocal power. These are even more increased due to her profound low register in the moment when being enforcedly separated from Werther, due to her powerful high notes when getting discouraged and due to her shattering vocal colour when recollecting her mother’s death.“ (Ölyrix)

„As Charlotte – whose role is very much spotlighted here - Anaïk Morel’s richly coloured timbre serves for an extremely profound embodiment of the character.“ (ConcertClassic.com)

„French mezzo-soprano Anaïk Morel possesses a well-balanced and gorgeous timbre as well as an impressing vocal power and volume. One may not be disappointed, if her vocal line is not always fully harmonious, but her Charlotte owns a most serious sensuality which makes the destructive passion of the title-hero even more credible. We are awaiting eagerly her Carmen in Montpellier next month. Her glowing timbre and her temperament should make her an ideal heroine of Bizet’s masterpiece.“ (opera-online.com)

„After having given her role-debut in Klagenfurt recently, Anaïk Morel is a deeply moving and fully committed Charlotte. Her timbre is compelling, well-rounded and mellifluous, exquisite and warm in the low register.“ (Resmusica)

„The cast consists of fresh and young singers who are sustaining the success of this production. Anaïk Morel’s interpretation of the role of Charlotte, likewise fervent and coy when expressing her love, needs to be held in high esteem. The lovely vocal projection of her aria „Va, laisse couler mes larmes“ is emotionally moving without any unduly vibrato.“ (Wanderer)

Charlotte at the Opéra du Rhin

A few weeks ago, Anaïk Morel made her acclaimed role debut as Charlotte in Massenet’s Werther at the Klagenfurt Theatre. Some press cuttings referring to that production:

„Anaïk Morel’s Charlotte doesn’t have to fear the comparison with casts at major stages of the operatic world. The French singer commands a smoothly controlled mezzo-soprano voice, equally compelling in high and low range. She delivers a flexible vocal-line without any break throughout all registers, captivating with a dark bronzing lustre timbre and flawless phrasing.“ (Das Opernglas, 01.2018)

„Anaïk Morel renders her Charlotte with a warm-hearted, mellow and wonderfully dark coloured mezzo-soprano which also grants marvellous delicate shades“. (Salzburger Nachrichten, 9.11.17)

„Anaïk Morel’s mezzo-soprano as Charlotte is equally exquisite as powerful “. (Kronen Zeitung, 4.11.17)

„Anaïk Morel sings Charlotte resonant, but also captivating, with tender and affectionate expression“. (Kleine Zeitung, 4.11.17)

Anaïk Morel is now performing Charlotte again within a new production at the Opéra du Rhin. Opening-night in Strasbourg on February 9, 2018. All dates of performances.

After Gesualdo, staged at the opera in Zurich in 2010, this is now the second opera composed by Marc-André Dalbavie. Anaïk Morel performed the role of Paulinka Bimbam, Charlotte Salomon's stepmother, whose name in real life was Paula Lindberg and who was an opera singer.
